The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery
If there’s one recorded album that every jazz guitarist probably has, it must be this one. Wes Montgomery is one of the most influential of all jazz guitarists, and The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery is one of his most influential recordings—certainly highly collectible not just for guitarists but for all musicians and listeners of jazz. Montgomery is at the top of his game on this album, playing thoughtfully, at the same time swinging hard. And with him are three of the era’s best: the brothers Heath (Al on drums, Percy on bass) and pianist Tommy Flanagan, who just a year earlier had played on the watershed John Coltrane album Giant Steps and whose playing here is imaginative and flawless. The album includes two of the guitarist’s most enduring original compositions, “Four on Six” and “West Coast Blues,” along with some standards and jazz classics. The Incredible Jazz of Guitar of Wes Montgomery is a gem. —Terry MacDonald Track Listing
