In an effort to bring live jazz music to the community, each summer the Seacoast Jazz Society sponsors outdoor jazz performances in downtown Portsmouth, with the goal of expanding this program to other seacoast communities. The musicians are all professional jazz musicians who donate their time and talent to increase awareness and enthusiasm for this very special artform.

Vaughan Mall is a pedestrian walkway connecting Congress Street & Hanover Street. If you're lucky, you can snag a parking spot in the Whale Wall lot off Maplewood Ave that abuts the walkway.

Market Square is the central hub of downtown Portsmouth! Parking is limited in the square, but wherever you find a spot, the walk to the square will be lovely. We'll be set up in front of Portsmouth's historic North Church.

Duane Edwards, bass
Led by Jan van Voorst van Beest, the van Voorst Jazz group has taken many forms over the last 20 years, with variations of jazz music and instrumentation, from organ/drums driven duos and small straight ahead groups to outside jazz with hints of the hard sounds of the 60s and 70s. In its current formation, the van Voorst Jazz Trio will be performing a selection of original jazz compositions and familiar standards.
Jan van Voorst van Beest – Drums
Jan has been a musician and drummer in the New England area for over 25 years, leading his own groups and as a sideman playing jazz, funk, and rock. He has previously worked and recorded with numerous musicians including Rob Eberhardt Young (national recording artist on Imaginary Road and Polygram records), Curtis Clark, Oliver Lake, and Alex Foster (Miles Davis, Saturday Night Live) to name a few. van Voorst van Beest has also recorded his own work which can be found on the Ludington/van Voorst record “Listening Post” released in 2004.
Isaac van Voorst van Beest – Piano
Isaac is a young talent currently studying with renowned pianist, Vardan Ovsepian and now with Alain Mallet at Berklee College of Music.
Duane Edwards – Bass
Son of a beer money bassist, grew from humble beginnings in the Midcoast of Maine. Starting out as a DIY heavy metal musician, his professional career brought him to 3,000+ gigs by his mid-thirties; performing the United States abroad and internationally. His second album as a leader, Birds, will be released in the coming months. Duane is the jazz bass professor at Bowdoin, Colby, and the University of Maine at Augusta. He also serves as an ensemble director and adjunct lecturer.

The Maddoc Johnson Band is a New Hampshire based group of musicians expressing themes of queer joy, love for the natural world, loss, pain, and radical social progress through the mediums of jazz, hip hop, songwriting, and free improvisation.

Tenor and soprano saxophonist Nick Goumas is a jazz musician who has developed his own mature, imaginative and identifying style. Nick performs with energy, feeling and musical integrity.

Anthony Iovino is an educator and performer originating from Londonderry, NH. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Southern Maine, earning a degree in Music Education, with a concentration in Jazz studies. After completing his undergraduate studies, he moved to Miami to join the Frost School at the University of Miami, and is pursuing a Masters degree in Jazz Pedagogy.
At the beginning of 2025 Anthony recorded his debut album I’ll Make Arrangements featuring his chamber group, And Friends, which will be released in July. In April, Anthony recorded his EP with his most recent project, the A.I Generated Big Band, which will be released later this year. Anthony has played with locally with the Portland Jazz Orchestra, and with prolific jazz artists such as Etienne Charles, and Wycliff Gordon.

Elizabeth Embser, after graduating from New England Conservatory of Music, now brings music and education around the Boston area. Her interest in many styles is especially apparent in her compositions which are inspired by jazz, pop/rock, musical theatre and classical music. This jazz trio group honors and reimagines the Great American Songbook, while creating meaningful connections with the community.

Annie Linders is a St. Louis-based trumpet player, trombonist, singer and bandleader. She is the bandleader of traditional jazz and swing band Annie and the Fur Trappers. Annie and the Fur Trappers have been touring around the country since 2018, and have played a number of music festivals including the Big Muddy Blues Fest, Musikfest, and The St. Louis World’s Fare Festival. Annie plays in other ensembles including the Jane Doe Revue and the Diamond Empire Band, and has recorded with various artists including Violet and the Undercurrents, Kabomba!, and the Gateway Jazz Project. She studied music education at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and enjoyed playing and recording in various ensemble in Columbia. When Annie is not playing the trumpet, she enjoys playing hardcourt bike polo, hiking, and paddling Missouri’s rivers.

Guitar virtuoso, composer, bandleader, educator and recording artist, Javier Rosario is the first ever Michel Camilo Scholarship winner. The scholarship was an initiative of the Dominican born, Grammy, Latin Grammy and Emmy Award winning pianist. It has been the first scholarship of its kind in the history of the Dominican Republic, where Javier was born in Santo Domingo. In 2006, Javier attended Berklee College of Music with full scholarship, graduating with the highest ratings ever given to a guitarist. In 2009, he performed at the Berklee Jazz and Blues Guitar Night: a concert which only featured the very top players of the entire school. In 2010, Javier decided to further his studies at the Longy School of Music of Bard College with a master’s degree. There he was awarded a Presidential Scholarship and was acknowledged by his guitar teachers as possibly the highest-level guitarist ever to enter the jazz program.

He is a founding member of the alternative rock band GrooveChild and the award-winning gypsy jazz group The Hot Club of Portland. Bryan performs regularly as a solo artist, with jazz and rock bands, the Seacoast Big Band and The Midnight Wrens. Bryan is the happy father of six and a public school music teacher.
Nathan Therrien is a New Hampshire native and active freelance musician in and around New England where his versatility has kept him in high demand. Nathan has performed in concerts and radio appearances domestically and abroad playing at such venues as Boston Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Nate performs regularly with the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra, various jazz groups and the Indie Folk band River Sister.

Berklee College of Music Professor Jason Anick, has earned a reputation among string players as an imaginative improviser, versatile composer, and insightful educator.
Growing up playing fiddle tunes with his family and classical music with local orchestras, he developed a passion for improvisation, which led him to study jazz and classical music at Hartt Conservatory. In 2008, Anick started what would be a 10 year stint touring and recording with Grammy award-winning guitar virtuoso John Jorgenson while still a senior at Hartt Conservatory. As a band-leader, Anick has launched a variety of musical projects over the years, including the Gypsy Jazz group Rhythm Future Quartet, an Americana-inspired Acoustic Trio, and a contemporary jazz ensemble with pianist Jason Yeager. His string of recordings (Sleepless, Tipping Point, United, Travels, Rhythm Future Quartet and Friends) has earned him praise from Downbeat Magazine as a "Rising Star in the world of jazz violin."
