Cary Kilner's Picks: Volume 56
Terence Blanchard – Jacob's Ladder Notice that Terence is obviously very influenced by Miles. His is a totally different sound from the mainstream Booker Little/Freddy Hubbard trumpet sound. Dig the pianist who solos first – very sweet – Fabian Almazan, a pianist new to me. And this drummer plays some interesting groove. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=o7CA19kXMq4&feature=share Ferenc Nemeth – Sounds of My Heart Here is a very interesting guitarist with a pretty tune. The bassist and pianist are Russell Ferrante and Jimmy Haslip from the Yellowjackets. The arrangement with the quiet syn behind and the drummer playing brushes creates a mellow mood that leads into a sweet pensive piano solo weaving back and forth with Ferenc Nemeth throughout. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=CAaMvVQRczc&feature=share Julian Lage – The Windup This is an adventuresome guitarist – clearly part of the modern school. And with an adventurous trio with acoustic bass and drums, but no piano, organ, or tenor. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=oOtlL3tjZ0A&feature=share Ray Brown / Eric Alexander / Russell Malone – Fly Me to the Moon This is a killer guitar trio with no drums but great piano and bass. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=eJeJiaMlUgM&feature=share Oscar Peterson Trio – All the Things You Are Here is some cooking piano from a late trio he had. Absolutely exquisite! These reharmonizations are typical of him. Thus, he takes his place in the pantheon of great jazz pianists with this fresh treatment of a classic warhorse/standard. https://youtu.be/4gePbZym85M Al Foster Trio – Alone and I He is the drummer leading this trio and playing a pretty Herbie Hancock ballad from his first Blue Note album. Typical of Herbie it has a very interesting harmonic structure. Kevin Hays is playing—a pianist I didn’t know. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=2uqypEwjJ6Q&feature=share Chick Corea Trio – Fingerprints This is a very advanced trio as you will hear, but eminently listenable. A great rhythm section with Christian McBride on bass and Brian Blade on drums. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=ROQ445NALvQ&feature=share Bill Mays Trio – When Will the Blues Leave? This is sweet! A true trio as you will hear. It’s just your basic blues, but opens with a nice quiet bass solo and subtle interaction with Matt Wilson, the drummer. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=F-zVHW9f9dc&feature=share Bill Cuniliff Tentet – How High the Moon See how he transforms this venerable standard in this kicking group. Lots of nice percussion moves this Cubano-Latin groove along. Especially note they are featured at the end against a montuno (a repeated rhythmic piano vamp in Cuban music). https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=SwWQQTg9kCE&feature=share Adam Shulman Sextet – Fantasy in Db A very interesting and melodic composition in the Blue Note tradition and with the piano style of Cedar Walton. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=iSZTEtvL3EU&feature=share John Hicks Sextet – Sweet Love of Mine Another fine mainstream pianist playing a popular standard with a nice Cubano-Latin groove and conga player. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=YwHMJcEQgFs&feature=share |
