Cary Kilner's Picks: Volume 48
The Yellowjackets – Numerology This is sweet. Every note on every instrument, carefully placed. Bob Mintzer has a great sound on sax. The electric bass is very effective here with the acoustic piano. He has such a good choice of notes and exceptional rhythm, and the electric is especially good for driving a big band because it cannot be buried by the ensemble. https://youtu.be/d21dlmUtMFE The Blue Note 7 then Bobby Hutcherson – Little B’s Poem The first is a Bobby Hutcherson waltz played with a fresh concept by a potpourri of modern musicians. The original version that follows is from an outstanding early Blue Note album with a classic Blue Note lineup for comparison. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y7_Lw52biQ&feature=share https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=3X-GdYVT7Y8&feature=share Joshua Redman – The Oneness of Two (in Three) This is a very interesting quartet performance by another great tenor player (although it sounds like it is played on soprano sax on this cut). You could say it is in 6/8 time rather than 3/4 time because of way the line is phrased with this jagged feel. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=kq03JHJ37iY&feature=share Thelonius Monk – American Composer; Jackie-ing The first link is a priceless hour-long presentation of Monk and his life. It is followed by a representative sample of his famous quartet with Charlie Rouse on tenor. https://youtu.be/ehvPDFfalFs https://youtu.be/yjtocY6kvqE Paul Winters – The Story of the Paul Winter Sextet This is a short piece about this very interesting group. The State Department sent them on many goodwill trips abroad right out of college in the early 1960s. Note the baritone sax player, Les Rout—he was at Michigan State University when I was there. With the bari-sax almost as tall as he was, Les was interesting to watch as he strung long bebop lines. https://youtu.be/to8V7Pj6gmI Aaron Parks – Reinventing the Wheel This is another modern pianist in a live video performance, with a very nice alto sax player. The composition is a nice bossa-nova, and the music is followed by a Q & A interview with Aaron. https://youtu.be/YaHCKJ3Q_8Y Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra – Lullaby of the Leaves This is another sweet big band, playing a classic standard. https://youtu.be/1QZccnrw2Ow Jacob Webb – The Coast is Clear I can’t resist leaving you with a short smooth jazz piece I found. There is nice bass playing and a nice flugelhorn player as well. https://youtu.be/3q9iIWkKSWg |
