Cary Kilner's Picks: Volume 43
Jerry Bergonzi – You’re My Everything What a nice mellow groove, individual and unique tenor sound, and a stellar rhythm section. He’s another guy with local roots, coming out of Boston in the 1970s. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=k2vE5ae58Ik&feature=share Fred Hersch – Boo Boo’s Birthday with Michael Moore on Sax I provided this as a trio version previously, but this is the first chance we’ve had to hear Fred with a horn player. I don’t particularly like this Monk broken-style of performance; I like more of a mainstream swing. Nevertheless, this is interesting and engaging. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzsXB66UtyI Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band — Landmarks This is the first time I have heard about this group. I first I heard of Brian Blade on a Bob James trio album in the early 2000s. It was sweet and very clean, but he was not stepping out at all. The next thing I knew he was playing with Wayne Shorter's quartet with John Patitucci and Danilo Perez and they were just killing it — the first really new jazz to come along in a long time. But Wayne has always been in the forefront of the jazz music scene. Miles Davis saw that, and it took him a while to get him away from Art Blakey in order to create the most innovative jazz quintet in the 20th century. Now Brian has this unique quintet with bass clarinet and soprano sax — wow! Normally I like to heard a tune — a song form — but this repeated harmonic pattern will get into your soul. It's also a great video. Get through the first couple of minutes as they set the mood. But then dig Brian; he is the new Tony Williams — the first really new drummer to come along. (Note: Brian Blade will be at Jimmy's Jazz and Blues Club on August 12 and 13.
