Cary Kilner's Picks: Volume 40
Brad Mehldau – from the album, Spiral: "Seymour Reads the Constitution" Brad is another pianist who breaks the traditional trio mold. Here is a very melodic cut from this pivotal album. Note his interesting use of the rhythm section. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=B_19wR-D32M&list=RDAMVMB_19wR-D32M Be sure to check out the whole album! https://music.youtube.com/search?q=brad+mehldau+trio+seymour+reads+the+constitution The Caribbean Jazz Project – Tell me a Bedtime Story I brought you this outstanding group last month and we need more! This is Herbie Hancock’s tune from one of his interesting five-horn groups. In fact I’ll give you the original and you can compare them. Herbie plays the first part of the A-section in 4/4 but goes to 5/4 in the latter part of that section, before the bridge. This one uses the 5/4 rhythm throughout although it’s hard to hear unless you take time and focus to count it out amid all that Latin rhythm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6Wyt6l6Td4 Herbie Hancock – Tell me a Bedtime Story This was during his early foray into electric piano and it begins with a light rock rhythm. There is much to say about Herbie and about this group and recording, so I will let you read about it yourself via the second link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f8SbbdrEQg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_Albert_Rotunda Roy Hargrove – Klactoveesedstene Here is a very interesting drum-less trio that I’m sure you will enjoy. It was introduced to me by a former student who reminded me of jazz trios with other instrumentation. This reminds me of the piano-less groups led by artists such as Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan, et al., during the “West-Coast Cool movement.” https://youtu.be/GEbI6M9w8Lc Benny Green Trio – Time after Time & Shiny Stockings Let’s end this month with Benny, whom I have failed to provide for you previously. Damn, but this is absolutely outstanding musics – right in the jazz-trio pocket! Tight, grooving, sensitive and musical as hell! And it's a tribute to the Oscar Peterson Trio since Benny has certainly learned some lessons from them. Check out the use of dynamics on the classic Shiny Stockings – whew! https://youtu.be/n9ScYWKdWhI https://youtu.be/Pun2_tckoLg Benny Green Trio (no drums) – Bellarosa Hey, do you miss the drums? Did you miss them with the Roy Hargrove link? No way, Jose! Enough said! https://youtu.be/6j1jF8qfRI0 |
