Cary Kilner's Picks: Volume 37
Tim Ray Trio – Windows Tim is a great pianist from Berklee and who plays with Greg Hopkins in various contexts, most notably in Greg’s cello trio, Con Corde. You’ll like his quiet approach to Chick’s classic 3/4 tune. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=RvUs-mBhkMU&feature=share Benny Green, Christian McBride & Russell Malone – Naturally This piece is just so sweet – it’s simply the only way to describe it, and it swings like hell without a drummer. Just three master players at work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcnAanPhqUA Bill Cunliff, Patitucci & Vinnie Caliuta – Conception Bill is another mainstream player in the mold of Cedar Walton, Eric Reed, David Hazeltine, Bill Mays, Bill Charlap (all these Bills), and others I’ve brought to you. This is a nice studio session so you can see the players in action. Check out Vinnie’s huge drum set. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSTk2URd8BY Chick Corea & Steve Gadd (Chick’s Chums) – Chinese Butterfly Part 2 A charming piece from 2018, you may recall Steve played on Chick’s Three Quartets with Steve Gadd, an awesome drummer and competent in smooth jazz and mainstream. This gig is a bit of a playback to Chick’s Elektric Band, which had David Weckl on drums. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=sIjQT9zKe_0&list=RDAMVMsIjQT9zKe_0 Three Quartets (dedicated to John Coltrane) – Part 2 Here is some of that afore mentioned band, with Michael Brecker and Dave Holland. (1992). These guys are absolutely burning and killin’ it! https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=jXqXeZpxIa0&list=RDAMVMjXqXeZpxIa0 Wolff Clarke Dorsey – She’s Leaving Home I never realized what a beautiful song this is until this interpretation. Check out his whole album of Beatle’s tunes. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=NW1eixYVH74&list=RDAMVMNW1eixYVH74 Kyle Eastwood – Now Yes, this is Clint Eastwood’s son, and he plays nice in a smooth-jazz, jazz funk crossover context. Note tunes like this are sometimes vamps like this that stay in one key over one chord. Thus, his approach must provide the interest missing by not having a chord progression being played over. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=I0QyFElbVso&list=RDAMVMI0QyFElbVso Elaine Alias – What About the Heart We haven’t heard from her for a while, so here’s another example of true beauty in piano voicings and in her Portuguese vocal. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=zE9hsfV55-M&list=RDAMVMzE9hsfV55-M Bob Mintzer BB – For the Moment Time for some big band, and with one of the best! https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=XsAF50vxNmA&list=RDAMVMXsAF50vxNmA Quincy Davis – Blues Unconscious I don’t know this vibist, but his group here sure kills on a straight ahead modified blues form. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=wvptAGxG34g&list=RDAMVMwvptAGxG34g Ernie Watts – A Simple Truth We haven’t heard much from him; I call him the ‘West-Coast Michael Brecker’ because he has that plaintive sound that differentiates him from other tenor players. Most often he is heard as a session player on smooth jazz albums, but he is a true jazz artist as you can hear. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=WwHI5sg4J68&list=RDAMVMWwHI5sg4J68 |
