Cary Kilner's Picks: Volume 23
Erik Jacobson — Bell Song I continue to dig up new trumpet players I didn’t know, and I’m happy to be able to share them with you. This excellent sextet with soprano sax, electric piano and guitar play an interesting 8/8 groove. Click here to listen Eddie Daniels — Homecoming and Chosen Words I first heard Eddie on clarinet with the Thad-Jones Mel Lewis BB (Week #6), and his beauty and technique astound. Here he is in two great settings, the second with string quartet, Eddie Gomez, Al Foster, and one of my favorite pianists, Roger Kellaway, who most likely wrote for the strings. You can see he has that clear bell-like tone I brought you with Joyce Cooling in Weeks #9 & 10. Note the crisp arrangement and wonderful snap bass work that helps provide a solid funk basis. Click here to listen Houston Pearson — All My Life I realized I have not presented this mainstream tenor player. He is featured in a classic quintet with Terell Stafford on trumpet. It’s a nice medium swing groove with a very supportive rhythm section. Click here to listen Chad LB — On the Sunny Side of the Street We have heard this young man in Weeks #6 & 8, and he continues to astound, as in this virtuoso performance. Check out his tour de force when they move into double-time during his solo. Then note how they control the energy by going back to regular time at the end of the solo, when this video fades out. Nice Brazilian rhythm section sounding very “American.” Click here to listen |
