Cary Kilner's Picks: Volume 20
David Hazeltine Trio Clockwise This is one of my favorite pianists, in the inimitable style of Cedar Walton. It’s a 12/8 tune that transitions back and forth from triple meter to swing 4/4. Note the tag (a repeated chord pattern at the end used to build energy in anticipation of the conclusion of a tune). I don’t know this musician, but he plays baritone saxophone in the style of Pepper Adams. It is a nice 6/8 tune that transitions back and forth to straight swing in 4/4. Compare this transition with that in our first selection, Clockwise. Click here to listen to Between Appointments |
