Cary Kilner's Picks: Volume 71
Mark Whitfield – In a Sentimental Mood Mark plays a very mellow and interesting a capella introduction to this classic Ellington tune. He is a very expressive player. https://youtu.be/ahVL3S2tTSo Steve Khan – Eronel & Let’s Call This As I recall he was one of the first jazz guitarists to crossover at the beginning of the jazz fusion movement. I really love the feel of this first tune and he plays such beautiful lines in a nice trio with John Patitucci and Jack DeJohnette. Another great rhythm section with Ron Carter and Al Foster further displays his unique playing, which includes some echo effects. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=TXULMk_mMGk&feature=share https://youtu.be/g56mXcMiMns Dave Stryker – I Got Rhythm He plays a really unique head to this classic bebop tune, then he goes on to kill the tune! https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=dMnMRsRNoJo&feature=share Tommy Halferty – Ralph’s Piano Waltz Here’s another interesting guitarist of whom I did not know. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=iSbLD-PdTrY&feature=share John Scofield – We Certainly an interesting style with a cooking rhythm section. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=8a0wlCc_G0Y&si=hbSR6-bs7fyxYPwc Jonathan Kreisberg – Relaxing at Camarillo Nice open sound on his treatment of a classic bebop tune. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=Er89NP5umJQ&si=uGBK3LUVs5tkfflE Barney Kessell Trio – Slow Burn Here’s an old favorite playing a hip blues in a relaxed manner. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=plceJGS580A&si=9tkg1L2VtgsPvtWR Kenny Burrell – Soft Winds Here’s another old timer with another classic blues. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=JjL5RythYlI&si=yeMrboXLRA4kQ74O Wolfgang Muthspiel – Solar & Giant Steps What a great modern trio, with Marc Johnson and Brian Blade, easily creating the right groove for Wolfgang. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=yJOPSHsWH64&si=4b0GAO3rN8WGndNg Russell Malone – There Will Never be Another You & Heartstrings I cannot find a trio with Russell but I wanted to feature his great playing. The first link is with the Billy Taylor Trio – live from the old TV program. The second is produced with strings and represents him very well. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=SkDqTtb-h7o&si=a50SAqc2IoJ-HNZM https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=SWJMPzwkwCk&si=w_PiJ-yuWK5PxcSw Joe Pass – Chloe & Work Song Here’s some space for you. With Les McCann, they both swing like hell, especially on the second classic Cannonball Adderly tune. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=zBf4kKoqnDc&si=pGpNaEThwHrJ0OTL https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=3A08fTdV2Fc&si=QWDmS2RFa5lcWg_Q Bireli Lagrene – The Days of Wine and Roses https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=3n-eBIEq2q8&si=OWQOYeuOv9UWZNmt Herb Ellis – It Could Happen to You This is another old timer playing pretty. It’s a trio, but Charlie Mariano plays quiet whole-notes as quiet orchestration to complement the track. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=bLZpn6bfVNs&si=MdDsq-kGNACsxsmt Wes Montgomery – The Days of Wine and Roses We’re ending this long column with the master. It’s a quartet with a very muted organist so it almost sounds like a trio at first. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=l90ShermeKQ&si=-mWU7ii1m-YbVhB |
