Cary Kilner's Picks: Volume 64
July 2024 Hot Tip from Cary: I continue to be impressed by some of the 109 Rick Beato interviews. If you have not visited one, here is a “master link” I found so you can choose whatever artist in whom you would be interested. Click Here. There are also great interviews on The Sessions Panel with Dom Famularo. Click Here for info. The TNEK Jazz Quintet – Unit 7 An interesting group – let’s begin with a mainstream medium tempo groove on this Sam Jones tune from an early Cannonball Adderley album. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=yCQil2mBeEs&list=RDAMVMyCQil2mBeEs Cannonball Adderley – Unit 7 I might as well give you the original, so we don’t forget what a powerhouse Cannonball was. And his brother, Nat, was no slouch either. Great rhythm section, similar to Miles’ second great quintet. Note the striking album cover with Nancy Wilson. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=-DIRlg76HsA&si=uydS0VV7uda4o6_c The Jazztet (Art Farmer & Benny Golson) – Hi-Fly Here’s a great sextet playing a Cannonball tune and featuring one of my favorite pianists, Cedar Walton. Note how delicately he swings, then the pretty ensemble that plays later on behind him, coming in as if an orchestration. The whole album is great. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=0rRrcEiULs0&si=SMzOHhtzPVngrtxK Tony Williams (w. Mulgrew Miller) – Green Dolphin St. & Young at Heart These are from an outstanding trio album by the latter name. Tony does his usual amazing interaction, using drums very musically. Mulgrew (RIP) is in top form, and we miss him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pdtb08ihndU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2evahZXQ08&list=RD-2evahZXQ08&start_radio=1 Bill Charlap – Godchild & Turnaround Here are a couple of nice medium swing tunes from this great trio. The second link is a blues, done in an interesting way. https://youtu.be/ctIS6zBamVA?si=JqALwsZMsS1DdA9n https://youtu.be/LvSlID4eJIs?si=S3RV0Ry5oUNSOt9d Nemeth & Leszlo – Sounds of My Heart This gorgeous tune has the principle Yellowjackets accompanying. Great guitar sound, great electric bass sound, drums stay on brushes – no sticks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAaMvVQRczc Nick Goumas – Theme for Ernie & Pannonica He appeared at the Press Room a while back. Here is a nice duo performance, then a relaxed quartet on this wonderful Monk tune. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=-UOARIiAgI8&si=GDRYER3I6GxtTMsw https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=C2CocSxRKSs&si=iEL1MqJnlh7ptQe7 John McLaughlin – Thelonius Melodius Great cooking trio with left-hand bass by Joey DeFrancesco It reminds me of that great group, the Tony William’s Lifetime. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=dW6iIq4OwYA&si=blRgRUS2y2xbBO37 Tony Williams Lifetime – Emergency Speaking of which, here is a cut from that pivotal album. Make sure your volume control sits low to begin! Tony at his absolute best; as well as McLaughlin, who then joined Miles. These guys just don’t quit! Note all the mood changes. Larry Young is on organ, whom I consider the “Herbie Hancock” of organ. And he’s walking that left-hand bass while all else is going on! https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=bmMHckNkJP8&si=G5qhl0jGGs3vbnrr Joey Calderazzo, John Patitucci & Dave Weckl – Chickmonk Here’s a powerhouse trio. Dig the long solo piano intro – he just eats up the piano – killer! And it’s nice to have the video. Weckl plays in the pocket without overwhelming, as he can sometimes do. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=d9GsX8T5CNs&si=Eyky411jPKBTiS_B The Jon Cowherd Trio – Chickmonk When I sent the previous link to a friend, he replied with this version. I don’t know the pianist but it’s refreshing to hear him, and the melody and form of the tune are more defined here. It’s Patitucci with Brian Blade on drums – he’s a bit less flashy than Weckl but has a more refined interaction within the trio. https://youtu.be/rQgbMSepiLg?si=By7VJeqPAKsFVHeM Brad Mehldau Trio – video live – 1 ½ hour This is a very advanced trio, and the side men are right with him conceptually. There is no list of tunes, so you will just have to scroll through it. https://youtu.be/-B1fd3OKjkU?si=NrvrnddbtIgjpILv Mike LeDonne, Jeremy Pelt & Eric Alexander – A New Day This is a modern jazz waltz – actually we would call it 6/8 because there are two 3/4s in a bar. Jeremy is a very mellow modern trumpet and Eric Alexander kills on tenor! I have found Mike playing organ on other performances. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=m-cRGiG-XVc&si=XOWTGXeiCWXrNWHV Emily Remler – East to Wes & Daahoud Here’s a classic guitar quartet with a stellar rhythm section. The first tune is in honor of Wes Montgomery. You will hear this as she plays octaves within her solos. The second is a bebop standard from Clifford Brown. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=A6fNKxf_7ew&si=EXRng2yt1WXsdtP1 https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=0LcrXoVvMBA&si=G4b57P31UMzq_iq5 Dave Brubeck Quartet – Besame Mucho This is the first time I have featured this classic group. Note what a nice job they do with this Latin warhorse. Brubeck really was a superior pianist; note particularly his intro. He is often noted for the counterpuntal things he plays, meaning a left-hand segment playing versus a different right-hand segment. You notice his indebtedness to the classical compositions he studied. It sounds like he has a conga player in the quartet for this tune. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=TvtaSiYAjaQ&si=pw9PXkSvVl3TJW-0 |
