Cary Kilner's Picks: Volume 63
May 2024 Dave Stryker – I Got Rhythm Here's a jazz guitar trio for you, playing that old bebop warhorse. I know you'll like this—pure music, no noise. Particularly make note of how effectively Bill Stewart (drummer) uses space at the beginning. (I'm planning to share links to more jazz guitar trios and this is a good example. You'll find a couple more embedded below.) https://youtu.be/dMnMRsRNoJo?si=hupHKBtLYuoHnVPN Geoff Keezer – All the Things You Are I haven't heard him in a while and forgot how much I like him. This link is quite a mix of styles. It might be a bit self-indulgent, but he sure gets a nice piano sound! https://youtu.be/J0HESVYoj5E?si=rj49wULalVQpSZ2m TNEK Quartet – Unit Seven A great new quintet playing a Sam Jones tune from an old Cannonball Adderley album. Note they do not change from Swing to Latin on the bridge here as they did on the original. Rather than a tenor player, a trumpet player would be nice to hear as a counterbalance to the alto player. I was originally trying to find the Sam Jones tune, “Del Sasser,” done by this group. See if you can locate it. The Cannonball Adderley original is below. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=yCQil2mBeEs&list=RDAMVMyCQil2mBeEs Cannonball Adderley – Del Sassar Here is the original and one of the nicest cuts on this vintage album. This was a truly great quintet. Everyone plays so great and with the classic bouncy groove that supports Cannonball with his inimitable sound. https://youtu.be/vAdE3pLlMFQ?si=9ZaC4pHZ7VQd6QFe Kenny Barron and Dave Holland – Warm Valley Here is a nice trio playing a Duke Ellington ballad. Note that many of Duke's tunes were co-written with Billy Strayhorn. If you listen closely you will hear a device I always notice that he uses on his runs. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=18m-0hZb4CQ&list=RDAMVM18m-0hZb4CQ Tim Ray, John Pattatucci, and Terri Lyne Carrington This is a great trio with Berklee grad Terri Lyne. And we all know how “bad” John is. Tim is the pianist. He often plays with Greg Hopkins, both teachers at Berklee. Greg’s music tends to be on the abstract side, but still eminently accessible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tAJdl9fQ1Q Jeff Lorber and Mike Stern – Righteous Jeff Lorber’s concept bridges among jazz, fusion & smooth-jazz. Mike has a sound all his own. This tune has a rapid-funk groove that gets me moving in my seat. It's a nice contrast to the previous straight jazz links. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj4S8OiDUjQ Jacob Collier – All Night Long I sent you “Don’t You Worry About a Thing” quite a while back. This is an example of the ongoing maturity of his music. As if he needed it since he was already a child prodigy. Besides playing all instruments and writing amazing scores, he has an amazing voice and sense of rhythm. I just saw an outstanding concert of him and several guests and in several settings with the National Symphony Orchestra on “American Masters,” but I cannot seem to locate it. One short clip shows up where Jacob conducts the audience in singing parts and making a performance of them. If anyone does find the whole concert, please send me the link. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=OicA8_E5EWQ&si=63TEcV3RC8nrkpMG Julian Lange Trio – I'll be Seeing You This is an amazing guitarist I've been meaning to bring to you. Check out his outstanding extended intro. It sounds a bit like “All the Things You Are” at first. This is very advanced music, so I hope you like it. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=8a3qAp81vY8&si=EHhji56uEijc2TwW Abel Marton Nagy – Cosmos Here is a very interesting fusion group from Poland in a video performance. To me they sound a lot like the early Chick Corea “Return to Forever” band with Flora Purim on vocals. Another amazing guitarist plays with them and the tenor player isn’t bad either! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXlq_pYDv3g Charlie Haden, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Paul Motian Trio Let's end this month with some beautiful live music. Of course Charlie and Paul Motian were already a team doing this kind of contemplative jazz with Keith Jarrett a long time ago. Charlie has a unique style of contemplative playing quite different from other bass players. And Gonzalo is another very amazing and advanced pianist.
