February 29, 2012, Wednesday, 7p.m. @ Portsmouth Public Library
(in the Hilton Garden Inn Room on the 2nd floor)

SEACOAST JAZZ SOCIETY
LISTENING & DISCUSSION GROUP

FREE and open to the public.
The Portsmouth Public Library is at 175 Parrott Avenue, Portsmouth, NH 03801. For more information call 603-427-1540.

This session of our popular guided listening sessions will be led by Richard Lunt, a member of the Board of The Seacoast Jazz Society. It will feature the jazz style often called “hard bop” frequently associated with pianist Horace Silver and drummer Art Blakey. It grew out of bebop in the early 1950's when performers began to focus on simpler melodies and incorporate elements of rhythm & blues and gospel into their music. Performers and albums at the core of hard bop include Miles Davis (“Walkin”), Clifford Brown & Max Roach (“At Basin Street”), J. J. Johnson & Kai Winding (“'Nuff Said”), Cannonball Adderley (“Bohemia After Dark”), Sonny Rollins (“A Night at the Village Vanguard”), Lee Morgan (“The Sidewinder”), and Art Farmer & Benny Golson (“Meet the Jazztet”).

Bring a favorite jazz CD or just come to listen. Not a lecture presentation -- Just an informal listening and discussion group – a great chance to hear a variety of jazz recordings and get to know other jazz lovers and talk about jazz. You do not have to be a musician. Fans of the music and those wishing to learn more about it are equally welcome.

UNH TRADITIONAL JAZZ SERIES PRESENTS
THE GREG HOPKINS QUINTET

Johnson Theatre, Paul Creative Arts Center
General admission tickets are $8 each and $6 each for students and seniors

Durham – The University of New Hampshire Traditional Jazz Series welcomes the Greg Hopkins Quintet Monday, November 14, 2011 at 8:00 p.m. in Johnson Theatre of the Paul Creative Arts Center, on the Durham campus. Performer, composer, and arranger Greg Hopkins first picked up the trumpet as a boy in Detroit, and to this day it would be hard to spot him without his horn. Hopkins plays even when caught in traffic on commute to Berklee College of Music, where he’s been teaching since 1974 - the year the London Times called him “a real find” for the Buddy Rich Orchestra. That symbiosis of man and musical instrument is evident in Hopkins’ solo performances by which he has served the orchestras of Louis Bellson, Billy Maxted, Rich, and Herb Pomeroy, as well as his own small ensembles and big bands. Hopkins began his professional career in 1965, freelancing in the Detroit area for such acts as the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and Gladys Knight. The list goes on. Mr. Hopkins’ busy teaching and performing schedule takes him all over the world doing concerts, festivals, jazz club dates, and clinics. Recently he has visited Italy, Iceland, the Czech Republic, Macedonia, Alaska, Argentina, and many others. A fixture on the Boston jazz scene and preeminent trumpet faculty member at the Berklee School of Music, Hopkins is joined by dynamic saxophonist Shannon LeClaire, along with his long-time rhythm section of Tim Ray, John Lockwood, and Joe Hunt, for an evening of spirited music.

General admission tickets are $8 each and 6$ each for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the UNH Memorial Union Ticket Office and at the door one hour prior to the performance. UNH TRADITIONAL JAZZ SERIES PRESENTS
THE KENNY BARRON TRIO

Johnson Theatre, Paul Creative Arts Center
General admission tickets are $8 each and $6 each for students and seniors

Durham – Kenny Barron’s unmatched ability to mesmerize audiences with his elegant playing, sensitive melodies and infectious rhythms is what inspired The Los Angeles Times to name him "one of the top jazz pianists in the world” and Jazz Weekly to call him “The most lyrical piano player of our time.”

Philadelphia is the birthplace of many great musicians, including one of the undisputed masters of the jazz piano: Kenny Barron. Kenny was born in 1943 and while a teenager, started playing professionally with Mel Melvin’s orchestra. This local band also featured Barron’s brother Bill, the late tenor saxophonist.

By 1959 Kenny had worked with drummer Philly Joe Jones while still in high school. At age 19, Kenny moved to New York City and free-lanced with Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan and James Moody after the tenor saxophonist heard him play at the Five Spot. Upon Moody’s recommendation Dizzy Gillespie hired Barron in 1962 without even hearing him play a note. It was in Dizzy’s band where Kenny developed an appreciation for Latin and Caribbean rhythms. After five years with Dizzy, Barron played with Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson, and Buddy Rich. The early seventies found Kenny working with Yusef Lateef who Kenny credits as a key influence in his art for improvisation. Encouraged by Lateef, to pursue a college education, Barron balanced touring with studies and earned his B.A. in Music from Empire State College, By 1973 Kenny joined the faculty at Rutgers University as professor of music. He held this tenure until 2000, mentoring many of today’s young talents including David Sanchez, Terence Blanchard and Regina Bell. In 1974 Kenny recorded his first album as a leader for the Muse label, entitled “Sunset To Dawn.” This was to be the first in over 40 recordings (and still counting!) as a leader.

Barron consistently wins the jazz critics and reader’s polls, including Downbeat, Jazz Times and Jazziz magazines. In 2005 he was inducted into the American Jazz Hall of Fame and won a MAC Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a six-time recipient of Best Pianist by the Jazz Journalists Association and was as a finalist in the prestigious 2001 Jazz Par International Jazz Award.

Whether he is playing solo, trio or quintet, Kenny Barron is recognized the world over as a master of performance and composition.

The concert takes place in the Johnson Theatre of the Paul Creative Arts Center on the Durham campus and begins at 8:00 p.m. General admission tickets are $8 each and 6$ each for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the UNH Memorial Union Ticket Office and at the door one hour prior to the performance. October 2, Sunday, 4:30-5:45 pm

The Seacoast Jazz Appreciation Project
The Press Room, 77 Daniel Street, Portsmouth, NH
Featured Performer/Presenter: Jazz Singer Dominique Eade

Note: This is a free event! However, if you wish to stay for the evening performance from 6 to 9 pm, the normal Press Room cover charge of $10 ($5 for students) applies.

Dominique Eade: The daughter of an American Air Force officer and a Swiss mother, Dominique took up piano at an early age and decided, when she was in the second grade, that she was going to be a singer. As a teenager, she added guitar to her musical skill set and played her first gigs in the coffee houses of Stuttgart. Moving back to the States, she was an English major at Vassar, but transferred briefly to Berklee, then on to New England Conservatory, which marked the beginning of a long relationship with that venerable institution. In 1990, she moved to New York City, where she began her recording career, and performed in a variety of contexts at venues that included the Village Gate, the Five Spot, and Birdland, and with such artists as Alan Dawson, Larry Goldings, George Mraz, John Medeski, Lewis Nash, and many more. Eade is a faculty member at New England Conservatory, teaches privately in New York, and is married to Boston-based saxophonist and NEC faculty member Allan Chase.

Tim Ray: Perhaps best known as the pianist for Lyle Lovett and Jane Siberry, Tim Ray is a Boston-based jazz treasure who has appeared on over 60 recordings to date with legendary performers of all musical persuasions. Among the jazz artists he performs with regularly are Gary Burton, Scott Hamilton, Eddie Daniels, Bucky Pizzarelli, Lewis Nash and Rufus Reid. His classical credits include solo performances and concerts with Gunther Schuller, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and the Boston Classical Orchestra. A sought-after arranger and composer, Tim has penned numerous original works for his trio Tre Corda, for solo piano, big band, string orchestra, and an extensive body of writing for jazz trio and quartet.

John Lockwood: A native of South Africa, Lockwood has made the U.S. his home for more than 40 years. As an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, his objective is to guide his students to learn the same way he did: on the bandstand. "I want them out there working and playing actively, the sooner the better. I never think it's too soon to do that. You're never really ready. You've just got to dive in and hope for the best." John is a member of the legendary free jazz trio The Fringe, along with George Garzone and Bob Gullotti. He has performed with such artists as Gary Burton, Donal Fox, Eddie Harris, Johnny Hartman, Joe Henderson and Freddie Hubbard, and that barely scratches the surface.

Yoron Israel: This drummer, percussionist, band leader, educator and composer is one of the most gifted musicians of his generation. His drumming is both exciting and tasteful. His compositional talents have been spotlighted throughout his many original recordings. His album "A Gift for You" was described by drummer Jack DeJohnette as "a sparkling musical offering from a drummer who has good taste...a sense of direction and a feeling of joy in his drumming, compositions and arrangements." Yoron has performed with Kenny Burrell, Horace Silver, Sonny Rollins, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Tony Bennett, Joe Williams, and many more.
