Cary Kilner's Picks: Volume 36
Alan Broadbent – Wonder Why This is a very pretty standard tune played by one of my favorite trio pianists. You’ve heard another of his back in #32. I encourage you to find more of this trio on YouTube. I met Alan when he was playing with Woody Herman. The show band in which I was playing hosted the band at our club. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=go_84MV-arE&list=RDAMVMgo_84MV-arE Jeff Lorber – Pixel Jeff is a fusion keyboardist who creates highly innovative musical pastiches. As usual, I recommend playing this loud on a good stereo so you can follow and appreciated the syn-orchestration. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=Dyz1tPaAzhc&list=RDAMVMzjoeNTvZ5xg Joel Frahm – Get Happy I’m sure you will appreciate this exuberant duo performance with Brad Meldhau. As you will hear, Joel is an extremely gifted tenor player. And about Brad – what can I say? Totally relaxed and in command of the piano. https://youtu.be/YWpwVAqGSHc Marcus Miller – Boogie on Reggae Woman If you love funk bass then you will love this. Marcus just kills it, overdubbing himself. Every piece of this production is pure funk! As you know he was in one of the last of Miles’ fusion bands. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFPA4GNDyug Michael Deese – Give it All You Got and Confirmation What a nice trombonist we’ve heard several times previously – so smooth in the style of JJ Johnson. The first link is with an organ quintet and the organist playing left-hand bass (when it is too fast for pedal bass), https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=SNQjTDWahYs&list=RDAMVMSNQjTDWahYs https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=3p8jegvRW_I&list=RDAMVMSNQjTDWahYs Mark Elf – Falling in Love with Love I’ve been wanting to bring you some of Mark, and here he is with a classic standard tune. The quartet has a great rhythm section including one of my favorite pianists, David Hazeltine, who I played for you before in Volume #21. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=xKXkSy1Cf7Q&list=RDAMVMxKXkSy1Cf7Q Bill Charlap – All Through the Night, Pure Imagination and Nice Work If You Can Get It I’m on a Charlap roll today. I heard him at the UNH Trad-Jazz Series and came to appreciate his rich harmony and delicate touch. I didn’t know this great trio with Kenny Washington and Peter Washington (no relation) has been together for 13 years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvI7Nyu9mHg This is from the same trio album but he plays a piano solo. You will have to love this poignant performance. https://youtu.be/MjM9F_POXsI And here he is with a nice quintet rather than a trio doing a pallet of Gershwin tunes. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=eyMK-FutAPE&list=RDAMVMeyMK-FutAPE Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes – Chorinho and Never Will I Marry You already heard Renee with her own trio in a previous SJS Monthly (Volume #32). And we heard this duo on the Lyle Mays virtuoso piece I sent in #32 and in #33 played by these TWO pianists instead of by one! I find the chord changes on this tune incredibly beautiful. It’s all about their movement and the sound we revere in the Bach etudes and Chopin preludes. I’m including it again in case you missed it. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=u9-o_mU0vVU&list=RDAMVMeyMK-FutAPE Then this husband and wife duo perform a classic Nancy Wilson tune. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgya62mb1NU Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley – Never Will I Marry I was trying to remember this wonderful album I had when I was a kid – with thequintet swinging like mad. And Nancy – what can I say? I’m sure the reader has heard her jazz program on NPR. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTFEtPXxo0k |
